
During a Press conference on Wednesday, Jun 17. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced that officer Garrett Rolfe will be charged with felony murder, along with the second officer facing three charges.
This comes as protests across America raises questions about the treatment of black Americans by police nationally. The widow of Rayshard Brook; Tomika Miller, attended the press conference accompanied by her two lawyers-- Chris Stewart and Justin Miller. Amidst the fires of protests, lynching, and mass unemployment across America. Republicans were forced to unveil a package of police reform on capitol hill that targets chokehold with legal repercussions. Amongst the many changes this week; from removing confederate monuments to the makers of Aunt Jemima pancake and syrup mix, who will now drop the 131-year-old brand.
The shooting sparked yet another movement in Georgia and caused the wendy's in the area to be burned to the ground. The Atlanta police chief Erika Shields felt the best move was for her to retire, after only serving 3 1/2 years in the position. This move came just 24 hours after the shooting.
The body cameras that were recording the incident showed a very calm conversation that lasted for more than 40 minutes; until things took a deadly turn. The man [Brooks] can be seen wrestling with the officers, snatched a stun gun, and pointed it at the officers before making a run for it.
The autopsy report disclosed that brooks were shot twice in the back, Rolfe's lawyer released a statement claiming the officer was justified in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks
“Mr. Brooks violently attacked two officers and disarmed one of them. When Mr. Brooks turned and pointed an object at Officer Rolfe, any officer would have reasonably believed that he intended to disarm, disable, or seriously injure him,”
The family attorney for Rayshard Brooks released a statement saying that Rolfe should be charged for
“an unjustified use of deadly force, which equals murder.”
